This is a fun story that allows students to chime in on the repeated phrases and is a great opportunity to teach prediction. The illustrations are amazing and David Shannon is one of my favorite illustrators so I always add his books to my lists!
Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Ruben
Who doesn't love tacos? This book is fun and silly but also has some great opportunities to talk about likes and dislikes (another D word!) It is fun to take a poll before you read asking students if they like tacos, or dislike tacos. You can also compare and contrast to the story Dragons Eat Noodles on Tuesdays by Jon Stahl. Both fun books!
Dinosaurs Love Underpants by Claire Freedman
I taught kindergarten with a friend who LOVED books about underpants. They just made her giggle. Dino's wearing underpants is a great one and all of the underpants books are great when you go to introduce the letter U. This book has great rhyme and students love finishing all the funny sentences.
Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey
I love including a classic on a book list and this one takes the cake! Make way for ducklings is a sweet story about a little family of ducks. If you didn't know, there are little bronze statues in Boston Public Garden that pay tribute to Robert McCloskey. I was bummed when I visited and didn't get to visit the park. Next time!
Arnie the Doughnut by Laurie Keller (this is on Storyline Online)
If you haven't used Storyline Online before, this is a great book to give it a try. I've shared the link HERE. Arnie is a donut that takes matters into his own hands to save himself from being eaten. A fun story that is sure to spark a lot of conversation in class!
If you Give a Dog a Donut by Laura Numeroff
Laura Numeroff's circular plot books are always a hit. I love to have students guess what is going to happen next with every turn of the page. They are great for this! This book is fun to point out all of the letter D words as you move through the story.
Duck at the Door by Jackie Urbanovic
This book is about a duck that doesn't fly south for the winter because he thinks he will like it. Turns out he doesn't like the cold so he has to go knocking on a door in the middle of the night. Let's just say that he doesn't end up being the perfect house guest but the family learns to love him and even miss him when spring comes again. I love a story that focuses not only on the letter we are introducing but caring and kindness as well!
