My favorite books for the Letter A

There is nothing like reading a fun book to a classroom full of eager students. When you can connect it back to your content that is even better! My favorite way to introduce the alphabet is through literature. Here is a list of some of my favorite books for the letter A. The Icky Sticky Anteater by Dawn Bentley

This is a fun story about an anteater that doesn't eat ants. After being told that he MUST! the anteater goes in search of ants. Each time he finds a new hole to search for ants out pops a different animal. He finds a mole, a snake, and a rabbit until he finally finds an ant. What happens next will have your students in stitches! In the end he decides that he will stick with honey and berries and his friends accept him for who he is. A fun rhyming story with a lesson about acceptance is a wonderful way to explore the letter A.

The Lady with the Alligator Purse by Nadine Bernard

An adaptation of the long loved "jump rope" rhyme, this book is a great phonemic awareness exercise in rhyming words. Students will love the silly story and it is an easy read aloud with sing song rhythms. Those are the best!

Hey, Little Ant by Hannah and Phillip Hoose

Often used as a book to teach about bullying this story promotes conversations about caring and empathy. The story follows a conversation between a boy and an ant as the boy is about to squish the ant with his shoe. As the ant pleads for his life, the boy needs convincing. The best part of the book, is that we never know what happened. Did the boy squish the ant or did he let him go? I love asking my students to respond to this question!

Are You an Ant? by Judy Allen

If you are as fascinated by ants as I am this book is for you! This book gives an inside look into the life of an ant. If you are learning about the life cycle of an ant this book is a must!

Ten Red Apples by Pat Hutchins

Always a favorite for math lessons Ten Red Apples includes a fun rhyming pattern that allows students to participate in this fun read aloud story. Includes counting forward and backward, animal sounds (so fun!), and of course highlights apples and the beginning /a/ sound.

The Ants Go Marching by Dan Crisp

This rhyme is a favorite in our classroom. We use it as we walk from the classroom to the lunchroom, the lunchroom to the playground, to the bus...you name it! Anything to keep them engaged as we walk...you know the struggle.

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst

I saved the best for last! This is a book that I always hold aside for a day when I have a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. It's important to share with students that everyone has a bad day now and again and this book is my favorite way to talk about it! It's also a fun one to share for the letter A for Alexander, especially if you have an Alexander in your classroom. So whether you have a day that makes you want to move to Australia, or just want to read a fun book this one is for you!

Thanks for stopping by today. I LOVE talking books and appreciate you listening. If you want some fun ideas to go with these books and other hands on activities you can see my Letter A lessons HERE.
