Pumpkin Investigations in Kindergarten

Ever get that overwhelmed feeling? Like no matter how hard you try you just might not be able to get it all in, reach every kid, pass every assessment, or even just finish the darn paperwork that is on your desk. That was my day today and I came home super frustrated. Then I realized that tomorrow is the start of our pumpkin unit and I'm ready to leave all those feelings of inadequacy behind and have some fun tomorrow!
The life cycle of a pumpkin is an excellent way to teach math, reading, writing, and science all wrapped into one! We practice things like sight words and handwriting while using our 5 senses to explore pumpkins. These hands on activities are great for fine motor and this set includes emergent readers for your youngest readers. #kindergarten #lifecycleofapumpkin #pumkinunit #kindergartenclassroom

We do our science units on Wacky Wednesday because we have a mixed up schedule because of an early release on that day and every other day is packed full. Oh the joys of half day kindergarten. I mix in things all week that relate back but our big investigations happen on Wednesday.

Where do we start?
Tomorrow is day one and we are going to get started with the life cycle of a pumpkin.
We will compare/contrast different types of pumpkin seeds, read books about the life cycle, and plant some pumpkin seeds. I've never done that before but I saw a picture on Pinterest so I figured I would give it a try! You never know if you don't try.

Next week we will start our science notebooks which take us into a 5 senses investigations, measurement activity, and a fun float or sink activity. I love that one because we do the same thing with apples but looking at the much larger pumpkin they are convinced that it will sink. Fun to see the surprise on their faces!

I've added these fun math centers to our math tubs for the next couple of weeks. We roll the dice and fill the 10 frame with that number and then count out how many more to make 10. The jumbo tweezers make it that much more fun! All of these items were purchased at the Dollar Tree.
