I loved reading this book to my class when I first starting teaching kindergarten. You can add in a little movement when the peddler "looks to the left" and "looks to the right" and the funny sounds for the monkeys as they tsz, tsz, tsz. This classic is a really fun read aloud. Cap is also a great beginning CVC word to investigate with this book.
Cupcake by Charise Mericle Harper
This cute and whimsical book explores the life of being a plain old cupcake. It is fun to stop in the middle and ask students what they might add to the cupcake to make it more interesting. If you really want to focus in on the letter c, ask students what starts with the letter c that could be added to the cupcake. They will be thrilled to find out the candle ends up on the cupcake in the end!
Clara Caterpillar by Pamela Duncan Edwards
If you pay close attention, you can see that the author used a number of letter c words to describe Clara. "Clara lay curled in the egg case for a considerable amount of time. Eventually a cluster of caterpillars crowded around her." I love it when authors use alliteration, especially when it matches the letter we are working on!
Corduroy by Don Freeman
Such a classic, this books needs no introduction! However, a fun activity to include when you read this book is to bring in a piece of corduroy. Students may or may not know what that is, so if you introduce it first, they can imagine just how special this little bear is.
If you Give a Cat a Cupcake by Laura Numeroff
Laura Numeroff is my favorite, especially when teaching the letters of the alphabet. Her circular plot structure also leads to a lot of fun and once students catch on the that, they always want to guess what might come next. If you Give a Cat a Cupcake is no exception!
The Cow Loves Cookies by Karma Wilson
Who doesn't! This lovely rhyming book is a fun one to read. I love stopping when I get to a rhyming word to see if the students can guess it. This is also a fun one to have a little cookies and milk afterwards!
The Carrot Seed by Ruth Krauss
Have you ever grown carrots? I have never been successful with them so I have a real connection to this simple story. You can add in some discussion about perseverance, believing in yourself, and never giving up too when you read this one!
Those are just a few of my favorites. What are your favorite books to celebrate the letter c? If you are looking for ideas to help teach the letter c I have easy to follow lesson plans here.
