Gingerbread Man Books for the Classroom

I love using The Gingerbread Man during the month of December to teach story elements. We track each story by characters, setting, problem, and solution. I think I have more fun that the students do! Do you get tired of just the same old routine every day? Add in a few gingerbread man stories and your boredom will run, run, as fast as it can, just like the gingerbread man!

First we read an original story. I like this classic story from Jim Ayelsworth. We plot out the characters, the setting, problem/solution on a chart like this one:
Each day we read another story and add to the chart. It is an interactive way to get my students involved in the story because they can not wait to point out the differences in the story at the end. I started doing a gingerbread man unit a couple of years ago because,  I have to be honest here..... I got really tired of Christmas around the world. I have been teaching it for about 8 years and it just got old for me. I know my students will get it again in 1st grade so I just skipped it for now.

We study gingerbread men, snow, and Christmas family traditions instead. I have loved the change because it is keeping ME more engaged. Yes, that is important sometimes!

My FAVORITE part of this change is the addition of the Gingerbread Man play from Heidisongs. Have you seen this? I caught a glimpse of a video on Youtube a couple of years ago and FELL IN LOVE with it. We have put it together for our families twice and it has been a HUGE HIT each time.

Here is a link to Heidisongs page and you can take a peek at her videos. It is an adorable (and super easy) play to do!
