The Pumpkin Book by Gail Gibbons
Actually....ANYTHING by Gail Gibbons when you are talking quality non-fiction books for young students. I love the examples of text features she adds in. I use a lot of her books when I teach our How To unit in Writer's Workshop too. I can't say enough about Gail Gibbons!
Too Many Pumpkins by Linda White
This is a must read for me every year because every year we let our pumpkins decompose in our flower bins and (almost) every year we get a pumpkin plant out of it. We don't always get a pumpkin but this year we got two!
This fun book tell the story of a woman who doesn't like pumpkins at all. When a truckload of pumpkins dumps in her front yard she decides to ignore it. The results are amazing! We make all kinds of text to world connections to this book with our volunteer pumpkin plants in our bins.
The Runaway Pumpkin by Kevin Lewis
This super fun rhyming book tells the story of a pumpkin that grows just a little bit too big and the adventures that ensue after it is pulled from the vine. A lot of text to text connections can be made to Too Many Pumpkins with this book.
Pumpkin Circle: The Story of a Garden by George Levenson
This book is a beautiful story of the life cycle of a pumpkin. It has gorgeous photos of every stage if your students have never experienced a backyard garden. This book is also a great introduction if you are headed to the pumpkin patch!
Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin, Pie (Pictures the Seasons) by Jill Esbaum
This book celebrates the seasons and has beautiful photographs that take you from seed to sprout and from pumpkin to pie. We use this book as we discuss what we do with pumpkins.
The Biggest Pumpkin Ever by Steven Kroll
This book highlights the care it takes to grow a pumpkin. This fiction story of 2 mice caring for the same pumpkin is a fun book that highlights cooperation and can provide connections to the non-fiction books read earlier in the week.
I use all of these books when I teach my ALL ABOUT PUMPKINS unit and some with this week of HALLOWEEN plans. I love using read alouds to make our day more interesting! If you aren't already using these books I highly recommend them all. Here is a pin to save for later!
